Celebrating Mother’s Day: Mouthwatering Meals & Infant Nutrition Tips

Celebrating Mother’s Day: Mouthwatering Meals & Infant Nutrition Tips

October 12, 2019 0 By Ewald Bahringer

Hi everybody and welcome to The
Balancing Act, I’m Julie Moran and I’m Olga
Villaverde– Today we’re celebrating being moms. I love being a mom. It’s the
best job out there. And I know also, I
love to eat and you love to eat. Well chef
Stuart O’Keefe has been hard at work
preparing a veritable feast for us and
well all moms out there. I can’t wait
plus a nutritional option for new moms
in fact this has to do with
breastfeeding and using infant formula– did you
breastfeed? I did. Okay I did too, but a lot
of moms decide that they don’t want to
do that– and it’s okay– Absolutely is. And today you have a
great option for baby and you, so stay
tuned for that. And something
else on the show, Vision Care simplified– a
convenient way to make sure that you’re
seeing clearly. I can’t wait and it all starts
right now, so stay with us!
[music] The moment you’ve been waiting
for is almost here,
the birth of your baby. And
having a baby is a beautiful life-changing
event, but it’s also a time where new moms
have so many questions and so much to
do– the checklist is endless; the baby
registry, the pediatrician, crib, room,
and more. And
more importantly than that the baby’s
nutrition. Many moms still
debate over whether they should just
breastfeed or formula feed and that decision
is really a personal one. Joining me this
morning to discuss this is Tiffany
DeWitt, a registered dietician at Abbott,
the maker of Similac infant formula. Good
morning. Good morning. Does that all
sound familiar because that was 15
years ago for me but I remember just
struggling do I breast feed, do I not? Listening
to people, the
advantages/disadvantages– I decided to breastfeed for six
months and it was just a personal
choice, I did it. Yeah it’s a very personal
choice and then the same thing happened
with me only in the very recent future
and so as a dietitian I always recommend
breastfeeding first, but when it comes to
your personal decision for me it wasn’t
necessarily one or the other but what
worked best for my family and my babies
to make sure that they got the nutrition
that they needed. So what did
you do you combined both? I did, I went
back to work and so what worked best for me
eventually is to make sure that we
combined both breast milk as well as
formula-feeding. And you hear
that from a lot of moms who want to do the
right thing but a lot of them have to
go back to work quickly and they can’t
breastfeed or they don’t want to and
that’s okay. It is, it’s more than okay and
we all know that breast milk is the
gold standard for infant nutrition
but it’s really breast milk that drives
the development of infant formulas
and it’s understanding that research and
what specifically is in breast milk
that gives babies the growth and development that they need, and
that my work at Abbott nutrition and why
I love what I do is that I’m able to
help educate and empower moms around
infant nutrition so that they can feel
confident in the nutrition decisions
they’re making for their families. And
that’s important because again you’re
making so many decisions before the baby
arrives– I remember looking at I don’t
know how many car seats, how many
strollers, and then going to the supermarket and seeing the
endless line of formulas it was just
overwhelming. It
is there are so many options, and so many great
options out there for mothers today and so
it’s important to understand that
while breast milk is the gold
standard, it’s important to understand your
nutrition options as a mom and what to
look for or what to talk with with your
pediatrician. So what should we look for? Yeah
so there’s a few important things
to look for when you’re thinking of
infant nutrition, so first, you may
have heard of calcium for strong bones right? Of course. And so when you are
reading or talking with them, with
people you may have heard of lutein, DHA, and
vitamin E, and these ingredients are
important to support the brain, and eye
development for babies. The second thing is
groundbreaking research on human milk
oligosaccharides– Similac infant formulas
are the first infant formulas to have
two FL, human milk oligosaccharides or
HMO and this is important for your
babies because it supports the development immune system of
your babies and this was previously only
found in breast milk at significant
levels. So as
moms we’re always trying to protect our
babies from every new contact that they
have during the day and so this will
help support that developing immune
system. And last for many
parents it’s not necessarily what’s in the
formulas but what’s not. Which is
important as well. It is and so it’s giving
moms options to look for with no
artificial growth hormones as well as non
HMO, so babies can make sure that
they’re getting the nutrition they need. So it
really is a great option for moms
looking for a good infant formula. Yes
moms need to feel confident that they’re
making the right decisions for their
infants and with Similac it’s been
around for over 90 years now giving
babies a strong start and giving moms
the confidence that they need to make
sure that they’re nourishing their
babies. But who doesn’t want to
give their baby the very best right? Exactly
that’s all that we want regardless of
what we choose– that’s what we want at the end of the day. Thank you so much for your time
Tiffany. Absolutely. I really appreciate
it, and if you’d like more
information on this you can go to Similac dot
com or you can go to our website

what’s on your mind [music] What’s a
better way to pamper moms this Mother’s
Day than with a gourmet breakfast in bed? And how about our adorable and
talented chef Stuart O’Keefe cooking that
breakfast for us? Cheers Stuart
and Happy Mother’s day to your mother too! Mimosa’s in the
house! I love a good mimosa. Perfect, all right so it’s
Mother’s Day but it’s not all about just
breakfast in bed, but breakfast, lunch, and
dinner. We’re
gonna go through a few things. Right here
we’re gonna start with you first. All
right. Okay so right here we got
some marinated artichokes on toast
with scrambled eggs– Think of like you
know your avocado toast that you would
make in the mornings. It’s one
of my favorite go-to’s. So tasty
especially like with the scrambled eggs. That’s
interesting. You put them up in a food
processor and they actually get kind of creamy
which is awesome. Mhm this
is so good, and good for you. I
know they’re cholesterol free and gluten
free. You know what, I’m looking
at this and about to dive into
this. Julie right
over to you, you got a frittata in front
of you. So you have some spinach
in there, again, some grilled artichokes,
sun-dried tomatoes. And I love
frittata’s I mean they’re not just for
breakfast, you can do lunch, you can do dinner. That’s
really good. You know what I
love about those ingredients– I like those ingredients on a
pizza but putting them into with the
eggs with a frittata which is basically like a fancy omelet
it’s such a healthier way to do it. And what is this? I hope it’s spicy, because we
know Olga and it’s all about spice with Olga, right? There
she goes, it doesn’t even phase her. I love this because you can
make it the day before so you just get some scrambled
eggs and put in some, some hot sliced
jalapeno from Star and some cheddar
cheese, some bacon in there. Just line it
with bacon fill them up put them in the fridge or if
the same day pop them in the oven at 350
for about 20 minutes. Now our
favorite, Salmon– you love salmon. Oh I got a
treat for you with this and this is super easy to make. We
could make this for our moms. There we go–Yeah. Anybody at
home can make this, so I’m gonna melt some
butter here we’re gonna make a lovely caper sauce. The thing
I love about capers is they’re like a little secret. I keep
them in my fridge and you can bring them out at anytime. Well
that’s the great thing about this sauce is like we have
a lot of these ingredients in our
kitchen already they’re pantry staples
like our capers or sun-dried tomatoes,
the artichokes– They can all last
for months in your fridge. And I have wine
in our fridge every day, every night—Cheers girlfriend. Which you could
actually add you know a half a cup of
wine to this sauce too if you want to eat it
on top like a white wine caper sauce. And I love how the products are
just so simple to get, Star and Cara
Mia, and we’re ready to go. Ready to go, so I’m
going to add some garlic in here as well
because we’re gonna infuse the garlic
flavor into the butter. Okay. And we’re
gonna make this all and then it’s just
simple as we’re gonna pour it over the
salmon okay and, and then that’s gonna
flavor the salmon we’re gonna wrap it
up in the foil and it’s almost just gonna
like bake in the juices then unwrap it and
broil for 2-3 minutes. Speaking of Mother’s Day do you
have any good stories? My little girls would make me breakfast in
bed but they let me sleep as late as I want, but
the best part of that was they cleaned up
the kitchen afterwards. Really? We
know when they make you breakfast and they
leave all the dishes, that’s no good. Well
we get a little picnic basket and we go
to the beach, you know South Beach. Perfect. And we
lay out so now I’m gonna grab my Cara Mia and my Star, put in my
basket and I’ll be good to go. Oh that looks fantastic. Okay so I just added the capers
in there, so you have the lemon in there,
you have the butter– Gets nice and
creamy, it almost starts to thicken up. You
don’t want to get it too hot because it’ll
start to split and if it starts to split you
just add some more cold butter and
bring it right back. Okay so we
got two fillets here of salmon I’m just
gonna pour and put my lemon slices on
top. Do you bake it or do you
broil it? We’re gonna bake it
first, and then broil it cuz you want to get it
nice and crispy, put that in, and of
course the magic of TV I got one made already
So now so it was in there at 350 for
about 10 minutes. Okay. Turn it
off and then you’re gonna turn on the
broiler and broil it for about a minute
or two– you want to stand close to it
because you don’t want it to burn and some broilers get
really hot, really fast. So you see you
get a nice charred effect here on top of
the lemons and so forth. But wait why is it
over there, bring it over here. While you’re bringing that over
here are there other recipes that you want to tell us
about, because it’s a little hot. Here
I’ll get it. I’ll get it–
That’s good. Are there other
recipes that you want to tell us about? Yeah so if you
want any more recipes I got a cookbook
out, The Quick Six Fix, it’s super easy,
great tips in there. Thank you. And guys of
course share all your recipes with us because we want
to see them, but thank you so much again
ladies. This has just like been
the best mother’s day ever with you. It has. Breakfast, lunch,
and dinner, I mean come on?! I have a better Mother’s Day
idea, you come over next time and make
this. No come to
mine– let’s fight over him. Fish or
Steak, would you want like a nice steak next time? Medium- rare I can tell you
that– Thanks so much Stuart, and if you need

day. Cheers! Salud! Thank you so much great stuff!
[music] Do you wear contact lenses? Well
if you do you know how important it is
to make sure you always have them on
hand and stay up to date on your annual
eye exam right? So imagine if there was a
company that took care of all of this. They found
you a local doctor, paid for your eye
exam, delivered your contacts for an
entire year so you never had to remember
to do any of this yourself again. I love
this! Well there is a place and
it’s called
Sightbox– joining me now to talk about
how Sightbox is simplifying Vision Care
is CEO Travis Rush, good morning. Good
morning. Thanks for being here. I’m
excited because let me tell you why
because my girls will always say “mommy
I’m running out of contacts and there’s
only one left” Really? Like you
put that pressure on me? So let’s talk
about how it works and how you came up
with this? So I’ve been wearing contacts
since I was eight– You’re like my
brother he’s blind as a bat–
My father and my sister are both optometrists so
I’ve been embedded in this world of eye
care my whole life whether I wanted to be or not
and in that, learning for my dad
especially as a kid learning about all the
things surrounding eye care, it’s not just about
being able to see, there’s a lot that goes on
inside of there and so looking at that,
looking at how complicated Vision Care is,
the concerns in the healthcare world
in general of people just not
knowing how much things are gonna cost, is
there a copay, is there gonna be a bill
that comes a month later that they
didn’t know they were going to get. So
people procrastinate and then they
don’t go. And
they have to go, I still get that annual exam, very, very
important right? So what we do
to make sure that that happens is we do
the whole year. So we, we plan that eye
exam for you when you sign up, we find a
doctor– unless you have one already you
can definitely let us know and we’ll
we’ll work things out with that
doctor, but if you don’t we’ll find you an eye
doctor near where you live or work that
fits your schedule, we booked the
appointment. You’re like a secretary. Pay for
the appointment, yes it’s a very
nice concierge service for eye care. When
your exam is done and you’re done with
the trial lenses or whatever follow-up
visits you may have, we collect the
prescription and then we overnight your
first box of contacts and then ship
those throughout the rest of the year as
you need them so you don’t run out. So
you still need a prescription, that’s imperitive? Absolutely
it is a medical device and the FDA
regulates the industry– you are putting
something in your eyeball and so an eye
doctor needs to make sure that you have
the right lens– there are hundreds of
thousands of different parameters and
brands and types of lenses, and so it’s
really important that that an eye doctor
be part of that process to make sure
that you’re getting the right one. What
brands do you support? I know my
daughter’s use, I want to save dailies. The most common are two-week
lenses that you throw away every two weeks,
there are monthly lenses you throw away
once a month, then there are daily
lenses you throw away every night. There are a
lot of different brands, we support all
of them– all of the major brands of
lenses are provided by us so. And how do
you find the doctors because a lot of people,
like you said, I have mine and you said I
could use them, but how do you search for them? So
it’s based on number one proximity to
where you live or work, wherever
you’re coming from for the appointment we try
to make it as convenient as possible. So
we’re first off making sure that they
can fit you in at the time that you’d
like to be fit in and then it’s based on
the quality of the eye care. You
know we’re not looking for the cheapest
contact, you know lenses fitting eye exam
combination we’re looking for quality
eye care that’s convenient for our
members and then we let the doctors make
all the decisions about what lenses. And
how does SightBpx differ from let’s say
vision insurance? So first off
vision insurance is not insurance and
if you go look at what it actually is, it
is a payment plan
for vision care and it doesn’t cover
everything. Most of the time you
end up paying a lot of out-of-pocket
for your contact lenses because the
vision plan only covers the exam and it only
covers part of the exam, so that’s a
big difference. We cover everything. We’re
managing it all. You’re taking
care of my needs. Yeah
we’re not just giving you a place to go
search on the web to find a doctor, we
actually do it all for you and manage
the whole process. What about
cost? So
our two-week and monthly lenses are $39
a month. Oh! That includes all of your
contacts for an entire year, plus your
eye exam with any eye doctor in the
country. Sounds like a bargain, like a
win-win. We have no network of
doctors so if it’s a doctor that you want to
go see well make it happen. So Travis
for our viewers who’d like to learn more
where can they go? SighBox dot come and it’s
spelled s-i-g-h-t-b-o-x, like vision. Thank you so much
appreciate your time. You have
beautiful eyes too by the way, and if you’d
like more information on Sightbox you can
also go to our website and that’s
