Child Nutrition Directors: Champions of Innovative School Breakfast

Child Nutrition Directors: Champions of Innovative School Breakfast

Looking at the child nutritional program for Durham Public Schools, we looked at how many students were
participating in breakfast. And, we were serving about 8,000 at breakfast every
day. Out of 34,000 students that’s not really a lot. So, we decided to look at
innovation. And the first thing we looked at was: how can we feed all the children
for free? And we did a universal free breakfast test, which allowed us to feed
an extra 2,200 kids every day, with more participation. And
from that we decided what else can we do and we looked at Breakfast in the
Classroom, breakfast kiosks, alternative methods of serving breakfast, and those
have helped increase participation as well. One particular school with
breakfast kiosks, participation increased 186 percent in one year, and the school
had one-and-a-half days less absences for every student which is a tremendous
amount of extra education time. We feel that the breakfast is the key to getting
the children a full, happy day.
