Does Fat-Shaming Help Reduce Obesity?

alright uh… that shaming may curb
obesity according to bioethicist daniel callahan not everybody agrees though a lot of people are unhappy with the
slow pace of public health efforts to curb american obesity which really is an epidemic at this
point and daniel callahan is a pretty
prominent bioethicist says that this is an edgy or strategy but it if you
actually are able to increase the negative social stigma associate it with being ovi ps this may
actually be an effective way of getting people to lose weight and he is
president america’s in a senior research scholar at the hastings center he put
out a paper saying a renewed emphasis on social pressure against heavy people
what some people consider to be fat shaming including posters that would
pose questions they for example if you are overweight or obese are you pleased with the way you look
saying that this strategy cluded of really help to get people to actually lose what do you think lewis do you really yep well before you go
into your theory allot of people disagree ok so for example we heard from
uh… deb burger from the california say gosh she’s a california psychologist who
specializes in eating disorders and uh… she says for him to argue that
we need more stigma i don’t know what world he’s living it doctor tom ng says the same thing he’s
an expert on child of this lbc he says no amount of teasing probing questions
about what they wish they could do her medication seemed to help if some of
proposing to help them by more statement is asian that would seem empathetic or
and unethical louis give us a thought uh… unethical acting it’s are not the call be afraid to to say things to someone when they’re clearly in denial about the
whole thing i mean if someone is is getting overweight is over weight you are afraid of offending never hurt
your feelings so you never say anything you like to keep happening will but i
don’t think most people of the time who are overweight are in denial i think the
item is just that if they are over weight in many cases they are not going to be
in an emotional state were more shame is going to get them to do anything in fact
they may do the opposite of say if i’m already so overweight i’m getting shamed like this i’m might
as well get the enjoyment from the ice cream or whatever the thing is i think you might very well do the
opposite because people will be frustrated and not being able to lose as much weight is they want to
get the body image they want um… quickly and then that might result
in the opposite effect will be frustrated and then depressed because
everyone’s shaming them they feel guilty about it and made don’t feel like they
really have the tools to actually change their weight the aperture we’re gonna
study about compulsive overeating sp is off into a kind of self medication
because of stressor depression or anxiety so if being denigrated for being
overweight causes more stress wooden it obviously stand to reason that it’s not
going to solve the obesity problem no i think uh… you can spark a fire under someone in and actually get them to do something
about it i mean in terms of seeing or thinking about what they
should or could look like i mean basie that every time you turn on the t_v_
everytime i look at a billboard every time a cozy a movie or look in a
magazine i mean as everywhere they’re they’re aware of that uh… so i think i think that uh… that this can spark something and i don’t know if across the board it’s
going to work in a la situations i think it will and i
to lewis saying anecdotally it may be successful send me your thoughts what do
you think about this i’m open to all ideas
