Dr. Sarah Hallberg: How much dairy can you have on a ketogenic diet?
What amount of dairy or lactose is allowed on a ketogenic diet? – Well, for most people
that is a great source of additional fat and often protein, okay? Sometimes we will have
patients who have issues with dairy, and maybe the lactose in it. It may be other aspects of the
specific proteins in dairy, and so it’s one of those things. If people are really
struggling, if they’re having some sort of side effect,
which oftentimes is GI, they could try removing
dairy for a few days to see if that could be the issue, but I would say that’s the
exception for most patients instead of the rule. So for most patients the
answer to how much dairy can you have in a day is
how much is it taking to get you full, as long as
you’re making sure that you’re meeting your protein
requirements for the day.
