– When somebody has a
significant burn, this is a major stress not just
psychologically and emotionally which are incredibly important,
and we can talk about that by itself for hours, but physically. So this is a lot of stress
on the body metabolically to try to heal that area that’s burned. So nutrition becomes very, very important. If there’s a person who has
a large burn or a deep burn what’s important is to make
sure they keep up their calorie intake because a lot
of times long with that you lose your appetite. You don’t feel like eating
that’s exactly the time when you do need to eat. We see this in children especially. They just don’t want to
deal with food or anything, and this is when we need to encourage them to go ahead and eat. You want to make sure
protein intake is good. Protein is what the body
mainly uses to try to repair and heal these areas that are burned. And supplements can help. There’s some evidence that zinc can help. There’s some evidence that glutamine, which is an amino acid, can help. But really those have probably less of an effect overall than just making sure your
calorie count is good, making sure you get a good protein intake. Now if somebody has a significant
enough burn that they’re being treated in a hospital
then the professionals in that hospital will take care of
all those nutritional needs. They’ll keep an eye on vitamins
and minerals and protein levels and all that kind
of stuff to make sure the person is getting what they need.
