Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com
and in this video series we are talking about how to make your own dog food. If you would
like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com.
So we are going to be talking about calcium, different sources of calcium. We just showed
you a chicken bone and grinding up a chicken bone. Of course, bones are an excellent source
of calcium and you can get calcium for your dog by grinding up chicken bones or chicken
backs. You can also feed whole chicken necks. Chicken necks are almost like French-fries
to dogs. Another source of calcium can be found in yogurt. You are going to make sure
you find a nice yogurt, which has live yogurt cultures in it. This one actually has the
cream on the top. You can see that this is the cream on the top of the yogurt. If you
have a dog with a weight problem, then you would want to get the low fat yogurt or the
no fat yogurt; you are still getting the benefit of the calcium. However, if you have got a
young growing dog or very active dog then going ahead and getting the full fat yogurt
is fine. Another source of calcium can be found in cheese and you can use just cheese
you are getting from the supermarket that you are having sliced up, this is Munster
cheese. It is an excellent source of calcium for the dogs. Another example of some cheese
here, I can break this up and I can use this as training treats for dogs. I have got them
broken up into little teeny pieces here and again a great way to get calcium into your
dog. Remember that because we are making the dog food, we are not just accepting the fact…
we are not just expecting that the calcium is going to be in there, we are just going
to add the calcium. So we are going be conscious of where we can get calcium and also another
thing we are going to do is look in to calcium ratios and you can find lots of good books
on feeding raw and cooked foods to your pet and they will tell you proportions and ratios
of the different things you need to be putting into it.
