Kid Science – Which foods do yeast like best?
Hi. My name is Ellen Guthrie, and today, we’re
going to investigate what yeast like to eat. We all know that yeast, which is called Saccharomyces
cerevisiae, or baker’s yeast, is used to make bread rise, but what do they eat in order
to make the thing that makes it rise? Well, yeast eat sugar, and they produce carbon
dioxide, and this is what makes bread fluffy. The experiment we’re going to run is take
yeast, mix it with water, and see if it will produce gas, mix yeast with sugar and water,
and see if that produces gas, or mix yeast with sugar and an artificial sweetener, and
see if the yeast like to eat that. The way we’re going to measure it is by looking
to see how the balloon expands.
