GREATER RISK OF INFECTION, HOSPITALIZATION AND DEATH. PARENTS KNOW A HEALTHY DIET IS KEY FOR THEIR CHILD’S GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. AND NOW, RECOMMENDATIONS SAY WHAT KIDS DRINK MATTERS AS MUCH AS WHAT THEY EAT. CLEVELAND CLINIC CHILDREN’S SAYS ONE THING NOT RECOMMENDED FOR KIDS IS SWAPPING COW MILK FOR PLANT-BASED. WE TOOK OUT AN ALTERNATIVE THAT IS NOT BALANCED. WE COULD BE LOSING NUTRITION FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. Surae: SHE SAYS DESPITE THE GROWING POPULARITY OF PLANT-BASED MILKS SUCH AS ALMOND AND COCONUT MILK, NOTHING BEATS COW’S MILK FOR YOUNG CHILDREN. SHE SAYS COW’S MILK HAS A GREAT BALANCE OF NATURALLY OCCURRING CALORIES, FAT, PROTEIN AND ESSENTIAL VITAMINS FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. WITH MILK ALTERNATIVES, THE BENEFITS ARE ADDED LATER IN A FOR THEFICATION PROCESS. IT’S NOT CLEAR HOW WELL OUR BODIES ABSORB VITAMINS AND MINERALS IN THE PROCESS. FRUIT JUICE IS ON THE LIST OF THINGS KIDS SHOULD AVOID. FRUIT JUICE TAKES SUGAR FROM FRUIT, BUT DOESN’T INCLUDE THE FIBER WHOLE FRUIT PROVIDES. BECAUSE A DRINK IS 100% FRUIT JUICE, SHE SAYS THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT’S HEALTHY FOR YOUR CHILD. WITHOUT FIBER FROM WHOLE FRUIT, KIDS CAN OVERINDULGE ON SWEET FRUIT JUICE. IF YOU THINK HOW MANY APPLES WOULD GO INTO A GLASS OF APPLE JUICE, IT MIGHT BE THREE OR FOUR. THERE’S NO WAY A CHILD WOULD TYPICALLY EAT FOUR APPLES WITHIN A SINGLE SITTING. AND THAT’S BECAUSE APPLES COME NICELY PACKAGED WITH FIBER AND OTHER THINGS THAT HELP THEM FEEL FULL. SO WE DON’T TEND TO OVEREAT WHOLE FRUIT. Surae: SHE SAYS WHEN KIDS HAVE TOO MUCH JUICE, THEY CAN DEVELOP A TASTE FOR SWEETS. SHE ADVISES PARENTS TO SKIP FLAVORED MILKS, SODAS AND CAFFEINATED BEVERAGES, AS THE NEGATIVE SUGARS NEGATIVELY IMPACT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT AND CAUSE BLOOD SUGAR SWINGS. IT’S BEST TO EAT THE NATURAL THING, AN APPLE OR WHATEVER FRUIT. Rick: MY KIDS LOVE SKIM MILK. WE GO THROUGH SO MUCH.
