Once upon a time, men earned the money and women
handled the home. They called it traditional gender roles and it worked beautifully. Until one day PLOT TWIST someone noticed women could earn too! And so, everybody agreed to share the burden of both roles and lived happily ever after! NAHHH. Although more and more women are joining the workforce they’re still organizing, planning, and remembering tasks for the home. In fact a Neilsen survey revealed that 87% of Indian women feel stressed from juggling multiple roles. This obligation is called the mental load and women have been carrying it around for ages, by being… selfless. Indian women grow up watching their mothers and grandmothers make selfless decisions every day. From knowing chhotu ki clean chaddi kahaan
hai, to cooking, serving, and then cleaning up, women are expected to put everyone else first. And while men may be willing to help out, they expect to be asked and when they finally do it, they expect to be celebrated. Step outside the family and women are sacrificing all over the place. In religion, Sita walks through fire to prove her purity. In the News, young girls sacrifice school so their brothers can go instead. And in films, Mother India is basically holding everyone’s shit together. Wherever you look, society has higher standards for women. Even though paternity leave exists, only 36% men opt for it, and many companies give less time off to dads than to moms. Even in relationships, women prioritize the needs of their boyfriends over their own. Not just emotional needs, but the fun, sexual needs too! Men are in such a rush to uh… WIN that they don’t pay attention to what the woman wants, and she is too afraid to bring it up. But if sex is a sport, it’s helpful to remember that you’re on the same team. The concept of female selflessness has been trending for a long time, subjecting women to carry the majority of the mental load. But what if we can lighten this mental load with PLOT TWIST II Peer Marriage! This is a marriage in which the partners agree to share the financial and household burdens equally. This helps contribute to the mental health of both partners and guarantees you a Happy Ending! No, not that one… okay maybe that one too THE END! Is sharing the mental load important to you? Talk to us about it in the comments below! And while you’re here like, share and subscribe to Vitamin Stree!
