Treating Obesity With Bariatric Surgery: Michael Fital

– In 2012, my father passed away, a cause of
real heartache and depression. He was my best friend and I just started
eating my problems away. I went from a weight of 220 to a total of 538. I noticed I
wasn’t sleeping right, I couldn’t walk five minutes without huffing and puffing, couldn’t even tie my own shoes without
taking a breath. It was just a burden. – What we’re doing is we are treating
medical conditions – high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea. We basically
prolong a patient’s life. In 2015, my son was born. There’s a sudden wake-up call to
think, like, “where am I gonna be in five years, let alone 30?” If I was gonna be
alive, if I was gonna be able to move around with my son, anything, it was
time for a change. Coming in for an appointment is like coming to see a
friend. His bedside manner is fantastic. – What’s so special about Michael is his
commitment. He was so committed to change his lifestyle. Without this commitment, we
can’t guarantee a success. – I’m walking 40 minutes every morning,
40 minutes every night, work, just eating right. – Some patients will think that the
bariatric surgery is a quick fix. It’s not a quick fix. This is a complete
lifestyle change. – Chasing my son around now, I could do that and just have
hopeful aspects for the future. So it’s inspiring me. My wife, my
son, my family is just keeping me busy. And he did really, really well afterward,
and he was one of the most successful patients that we have. – Seven months out
now with down 233 pounds. It was like waking up
to a new life. It was just the way I was being looked at, being treated, just a
whole new existence.
